Area 1 Scholarship Write-ups Posted

The Area 1 USEA Scholarship program is one that I've been absolutely thrilled and honored to work on. It's been a tremendous success in its short two-year span, and I'm looking forward to a third year of work.

The write-ups for last year's recipients were just posted on the Area 1 website, and I couldn't be prouder of all of them. They run the gamut from kids to adults, from amateurs to professionals, from BN riders to upper level riders.

I think I speak for all the committee members when I say that it really is a privilege to share so many hopes and dreams as we review applications. I wish we were awash in cash and could hand scholarships out to everyone. But our resources are limited and we try to share them as best we can.

So go, read these inspiring stories, and if you're in Area 1 (or you ride & compete frequently in Area 1) apply in 2014!

(Spoiler alert: one of them, the little girl who used the scholarship money to make her last season with the pony she was outgrowing, made me cry both in reading the application and in reading her follow-up report.)

No, I'm okay, it's just dusty in here, that's all...

I really enjoyed seeing her and the others out and about this season. I feel so invested in all of these guys now!

    1. I know, it's one of the wonderful side benefits - getting to know everyone in this way!

  2. Thanks for posting this! We're in area 1 too and I was really interested in reading the story about the girl outgrowing her pony. This year we had to put down my daughter's beloved first pony and she moved on to a feisty pony who is challenging her in many ways. But it has been good because it is helping her to move forward as a rider (and a person. . .). But instead of putting tears in my eyes, Emily Gilbert's story gave me hope--she's 5'8" and is finally outgrowing her pony. Maybe my daughter's pony will last her a looonnnnngggg time. I hope so because I know when she outgrows her pony she'll probably steal my youngster (who should be a solid citizen by then)!

    1. I'm so sorry you lost your pony! That must have been so difficult for your daughter.

I'm glad Emily's story inspired you. She put together a really articulate and thoughtful scholarship, and I'm so thrilled she was able to follow through on her plans.

I love the idea of graduating your daughter up to your young horse! Keep 'em in the family!
