To be honest, some of the horrible judgements people jumped to on COTH forums made me feel sick for the rider and I doubt I'll read there again for while, if ever.
I do agree though - if you're on the world stage it's not as simple as 'her horse- her decision, everyone else please ignore and go away, these things happen in eventing". In general, much as I love eventing, the whole sport needs to take a hard look at the amount of injuries and deaths occurring. Accidents with horses happen, anywhere, anytime, yes...but they sure seem to happen a lot more often/ride on the upper level cross country course.Thttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05438372155463437107noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8751398798342994168.post-59368135509352512122015-04-29T12:18:52.837-04:002015-04-29T12:18:52.837-04:00Very well written. The weather conditions? Yes. The ground? Yes. Especially with how long the grass was which made it exceptionally slippery.Hawkhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05303236534507171227noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8751398798342994168.post-33176592026455549032015-04-29T10:22:50.510-04:002015-04-29T10:22:50.510-04:00This is an incredible piece of writing, visceral a...This is an incredible piece of writing, visceral and smart both at once. This.

I think Emily 100% made the right decision, BUT I think all the people defending her under the banner of "her horse, her decision" have it all wrong. Once you hit that international stage, they aren't just "your horse" anymore. They're everyone's horse. Everyone's heroes.

There is (as there should be) a much higher level of accountability when you push a horse onto the world stage. If equine sport is going to survive, they're going to need to step up and address that.

My heart goes out to Emily. That is a horrible choice to have to make and the way the news broke did her no favors. It's unfortunate that she's the one being made an example of, but this is a glaring blind spot in the eventing community and this is what has to change. A horse dying isn't "oops, personal thing go away". It's a much bigger deal with a lot of accountability involved.

It's not easy when you're the grieving owner/rider, but if you wanted easy, you needed to stay at BN.SprinklerBandithttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02948487857418394022noreply@blogger.com
